Silver nitrate
Purpose
Silver nitrate is used to further develop the fingerprints when the development with ninhydrin is unsatisfactory. Usually, development with silver nitrate is the final process when developing fingerprints on light-colored porous surface.
Solution formula
1-3g silver nitrate dissolved in 100ml distilled water.

Working principle
Silver nitrate reacts with chloride ions in the fingerprint component to form silver chloride, which is photodecomposed into black elemental silver to develop the fingerprints.
Method
Saturate the exhibit with the silver nitrate solution or apply the solution to the exhibit. Irradiate the exhibit with UV light or sunlight until the dark brown fingerprints occur.
Notes
The fingerprints developed with silver nitrate will disappear gradually over time. So, once the development is complete, a photo should be taken immediately.
